Meet Mayhew, protagonist of Pete Duval’s “Strange Mercies.” Once upon a time in a faraway, Spanish-speaking land, Mayhew has a job to do document via videotape a young woman whose Christ-like wounds bleed on cue and without scientific explanation, whose street-preacher performances might be exposed as trickery or recorded as real, a mystery we can’t explain away, "Strange Mercies" evokes a world of staggering heat and blinding midday light, a world of stray dogs and curlews, “their song beautiful beyond description.” From this world something miraculous is made a modern parable that feels channeled from the ghosts of Fyodor Dostoevsky and John of Patmos.

Strange Mercies Working Titles Book 5 edition by Pete Duval Mark Powell Steve Davenport Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Pete Duval's Strange Mercies is a subtle masterpiece. It's very rare to find writing in English that so finely walks the line between everyday life--tangible, psychological, human in the day to day--and the transcendent.
That in-between space isn't something that you can grasp and hold. At best, you can touch, like Mayhew touching the stigmata. In the same way, Duval's story touches what some call God, what an atheist like me would call the ineffable. The closest I come to understanding believers is when I read a story like this and think of Christian grace, that most sophisticated and open idea within Christianity that makes me wish we atheists had a better language for describing that which is beyond language and logic and symbolic representation, which is simultaneously at the very centre of us all and forms the background fabric of being.
Art, at its very best, brings us within touching distance of that numinous sense of being, and Strange Mercies does it better than any writing I have read in a very long time. Kafka did it in a much darker form, D.N. Stuefloten did it through the dislocation of culture, and now Pete Duval does it using Christian language. It's rare and it's beautiful.
Great work. Dark, grungy, and bizarre. I loved it!
